Power transformers play a critical role in the U.S. electric power transmission and distribution system, acting as the off-ramps for power coming off the high voltage transmission lines down to the substations that distribute it. This is why power transformers are a critical part of any spares strategy. An emergency spare transformer program can provide needed redundancy, and help prevent an outage or restore power quickly when there’s a natural or even man-made event. The Department of Homeland Security’s Science and Technology Directorate has one of their own and has completed testing on the Recovery Transformer (RecX). The RecX is a mobile spare extra high voltage transformer designed to rapidly deploy to a needed location in the event of a transformer failure to restore power within days instead of weeks. While there is still much to be done, RecX builds our resilience capabilities.
